Japan: US forces ‘incorrect’ about timing of notification for easing COVID rules

1 min read

Japan’s foreign ministr says the US forces in Japan are wrong about the timing of when they notified the Japanese side they had eased coronavirus restrictions.

The US military in Japan has been easing anti-virus restrictions since September last year. It no longer requires testing of its service members and other personnel upon their arrival in Japan.

This was in breach of the July 2020 agreement with Japan.

NHK asked the US military in writing why it did not promptly share information with Japanese authorities.

The US military responded, “We have kept our Government of Japan counterparts informed of measures being taken.”

Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa told the Diet on Thursday that the Japanese government had confirmed on December 24 last year that US military personnel were being exempted from pre-arrival testing.

He said he has conveyed in an email at the working level that it is incorrect for the US military to claim it had informed the Japanese side of its measures prior to December 24.
